Starving troops and a need for more supplies helped the Temperance Union gain support
The women’s Christian temperance union was trying to ban alcohol since before the start of the 1900's. Then during the war the union finally succeeded in the ban of alcohol across Canada, except for Quebec. The war helped because men and women had no need for alcohol in the homeland and the grain could better be used to feed soldiers and civilians rather than for drink. Also women believed that workers should be making war supplies instead of drinking.
After the War in 1918 the federal government made Prohibition official, banning the production, import, and transportation of liquor across the country. This affected Canada in a major way because of the soldiers coming home people wanted them to be happy and safe in a "new world". This was partly the case but all the soldiers wanted to do was relax and the way to do that is to drink until you were drunk and it helped some soldiers with their shell shock.
