Prohibition in Canada during the 1920's was the start of a new era. With that era came the law of prohibition; the restriction of not being allowed to sell or transport any liquor. The people who mostly wanted prohibition were from churches or women because it was against their beliefs. Some Canadians got around the prohibition law by becoming moonshine brewers and rum runners. These people were run by Mobsters like Al Capone located in the U.S. The rum runners who came from Canada would smuggle the liquor across the border for Al Capone in exchange for enormous amounts of cash. The only province that really never had prohibition was Quebec who voted 80% against and 20% for. Most people believed that prohibition would reduce crimes in Canada and there would be hardly any requirement for jails. Instead of having jails that money could be used to create additional jobs. Prohibition did result in less drunken cases but there was a new threat that came with it, and those were the mobs. The main reason prohibition ended was because of the government. They were losing millions of tax dollars to the illegal sale of alcohol. After prohibition ended there were very strict rules around the use of alcohol. People were monitored and if they could drink responsibly they would be left alone but others that drank alcohol just to get drunk were restricted from drinking it in any place that sold it. As time went on restaurants were allowed to serve liquor as long as they had a license for it. Prohibition was an era to remember.
